Never Take It Lightly

For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But a man must examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.

For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep. But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.
(1 Corinthians 11:23-32)

As Jesus partook of the Passover with His disciples He passed them the bread and He passed them the wine, but He made no mention of the lamb.

In Exodus 12:1-14 we learn that the Passover lamb was to be brought into the home on the 10th of the month and slain on the 14th… at twilight. For three days the lamb would stay in the dwelling and live among the family that would take it’s life for their sin.

For three years the Lamb of God stayed among the dwellings of those who would take His life… The One who would die at Passover for their sin… though they did so with no understanding as to the mystery of the glorious moment in which they were in or with any awareness of the glory of the One which was the Lamb of God come to take away the sin of the world.

In that upper room as He passed the bread and the wine, Jesus, the Passover Lamb said, “Do this in remembrance of Me.” There would be no need to eat of the Passover lamb again. There would be no need for the blood of an animal to flow from the altars of man for the blood of the Lamb of God would satisfy the wrath of God for all eternity as His blood flowed not over an earthly altar, but over the very altar of God in the heavens (Hebrews 9).

So as you partake of the bread and of the wine do so in remembrance of the Lamb who stood before those who would betray Him, deny Him, abandon Him, doubt Him, crucify Him… and yet He loved them. He loved you. He loved me… and this death He died was for our salvation.

Never take it lightly.

With this bread and with this cup we proclaim the death that He died so that we might have life, life eternal. We didn’t deserve it. We couldn’t earn it. We won’t ever be able to repay it… yet still He gave it.

The Power of Perspective

One of the short definitions of perspective is that it is a particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines perspective as:

*the technique or process of representing on a plane or curved surface the spacial relation of objects as they might appear to the eye; specifically :  representation in a drawing or painting of parallel lines as converging in order to give the illusion of depth and distance

* a picture in perspective

* the interrelation in which a subject or its parts are mentally viewed <places the issues in proper perspective>;also point of view

* the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance <trying to maintain my perspective>
*a visible scene; especially :  one giving a distinctive impression of distance
* a mental view or prospect <to gain a broader perspective on the international scene
*the appearance to the eye of objects in respect to their relative distance and positions

From this picture cartoon what we see is two different perspectives on the same thing. According to the point of view of both, they are both right and probably willing to fight for what that see as true according to their own perspective.

 

This week my husband and our two youngest daughters traveled to Asheville, North Carolina. My husband had a conference he was speaking at, so the girls and I tagged along. On the drive there, we were channel surfing through the radio, and my husband stopped on the popular song Say Something. The only time my husband and I had heard this song performed was by unmarried barely out of their teens kids on The X Factor and American Idol…

 

 

Thus far, we have seen this song as an over-dramatic plea from a teen crush. So my husband begins doing what he does in being silly and trying to entertain his girls and make us laugh… and he says, “so what I’m hearing is dude here has been laying it out for old girl and she ain’t giving him any signs that she’s into him, so he’s like say something or I’m out!”  

We all laugh… because he’s pretty good at making us laugh.

Then our Shelby shares another perspective with us on the song. She shares how she saw a video of a elderly man holding his wife’s hand in the hospital as she lay there unable to respond to him as her life was passing away…

Now at this point I look at my husband and neither of us is laughing… we are now listening to the words of this song from a completely different point of view… now we are both crying. I mean tears and snot crying. Neither of us will ever hear the words of this song the same again.

My husband then turns to our Shelby and says, “Thanks a lot Shelby! I liked my story better!”

Perspective is huge.

Our Father in Heaven knows that perspective is huge… that’s why He sent His Son.

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. 

John 1:14

Jesus came as the Word made flesh so that we could see the Word of God from a whole different perspective. People had been looking at the Word through the eyes of Pharisees for a very long time. The Gentiles had never seen any relevance of the Word to them… and the majority of the Jews were not to quick to help them see it either.

The wrong perspective on the Word of God leads to fear, condemnation, and death but the right perspective leads to love, mercy, and life.

In a world that once again is trying hard to make the Word of God about fear, condemnation, and death… let those of us who see it as the Only Way to love, mercy, and life be willing to demonstrate our point of view not just through our words but through our actions. I love what David Powlison wrote in his book Speaking Truth in Love…

Preach the Word-vividly. Counsel the Word-vividly. Clothe the bones of biblical teaching and principle in the flesh of drama, metaphor, and integrity.

The Word of God was never meant to be cold, hard, and lifeless… it was meant to bring hope.

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
Because the Lord has anointed me
To bring good news to the afflicted;
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to captives
And freedom to prisoners;
To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord

Isaiah 61:1-2

Where there is hope, despondency cannot survive.

Jesus came to bring hope to those in despair… even those in despair due to their perspective of His Father. He didn’t condemn those who did not see… only those who refused to see. There is a difference.

Jesus also did not stand on His perspective and expect people to come to His way of seeing things on their own… He went to them and saw things from their perspective and then showed them how to see things from His.

Let us learn from our Teacher and do likewise.

Raising A Missionary… Maybe

I’ll never forget it. I was piled up on my Shelby’s bed a couple of years ago and we had just finished our bed time devo when she looked at me and asked when she could go on a mission trip. I told her I just didn’t know the answer to that… it was in God’s timing and plan. She next, with all the sincerity her then just barely 11 year old eyes could muster said, “But Momma, I know God has called me to go?”

Now here beith the dilemma. This is the child that just loves “to go”. It doesn’t ever matter where… if someone is going somewhere… she wants to go. She is our “can I go” child and our Bekah is our “can I have” child.

So when she looked at me then, those couple of years ago, I had to wonder if she was really called… or if she just wanted to go.

So I did what mother’s do… I pondered these things in my heart.

Now here we are two years later and in July she leaves with my husband and her daddy to serve in Guatemala at an orphanage with MANNA Worldwide.

When this mission opportunity came available my husband and I both new it was time.  It was not just time for her to go as a missionary, but it was time for her to learn how to be a missionary.

A missionary is to be dependent upon God (Romans 8:32, Ephesians 3:20).

A missionary has to know how to trust God to raise funds from and through the saints while giving all praise to God (2 Corinthians 9:1-15, Philippians 4:15-19).

A missionary must be willing to work (2 Thessalonians 3:6-10)

Here is Shelby serving last year in local missions as she served with her youth group.

We don’t know if God is preparing our Shelby for a life of overseas missions, or just using this as an opportunity to teach her how important it is to support missionaries, or just to use her to serve others in this day and in this way, for such a time as this… but either which way, as her parents, and as followers of Christ, we knew we could not miss this teaching and training opportunity.

Shelby would write her own letter telling her story and what mission she would be attending and what she was asking. She would be the one who would walk our neighborhood going door to door sharing this mission and asking for support. She would be the one who filled out and stuffed and mailed the letter she had written.

Her main fundraiser has been selling these shoes for the orphans in Guatemala.

She asks $21.00 for the shoes. $7.00 of that goes toward the purchase of the shoes and $14.00 goes toward the cost of her to personally get these shoes to the orphans. Her and her Dad’s goal is 200 pair of shoes. So far they have sold 102 pairs! 

They are 98 pair away from their goal. If you are interested in purchasing a pair… let us know. I will get you to Shelby and she will hook you up! 😉

She would also look for every opportunity she could to make her own money to go towards the mission. She would also willingly and cheerfully sacrifice other money spending ventures in order to make sure that she was spending and saving with this mission in mind.

She would also be the one to type out and mail the thank you letters to those who had given.

Several months ago she tearfully asked what she could do to get people to hire her to babysit or tutor younger kids… She knew she was only twelve and she didn’t know how to let others know she was willing.

I shared with her that God had a way of opening up doors in His will, in His way, and in His time.

A couple of nights ago I received a message from someone who needed a sitter for her daughter. All of her regular sitters were not available and she began to pray. As she prayed the Lord directed her to our Shelby and she asked if Shelby would be able to babysit and as payment they would make weekly donations to her trip.

It brought tears to my eyes to once again be reminded of God’s faithfulness to provide and to be able to share that with my Shelby… I love God-proved moments! Thus the name of this ministry, Proven Path.

He always proves His Word… we just have to trust Him.

Shelby is pretty crafty too (she does not get this from me), and her Grandmother discovered some necklaces on Pinterest, so she and Shelby spent the night making them so that Shelby could sell them to raise money to go towards this mission.

Yes, we have helped her. We stick to the rules of Facebook and so she doesn’t have one. She has a Twitter but the privacy settings are on high, so no one can share her tweets. Therefore, her Dad and I have been the social media outreach for her… and well her Dad is going as well, so he is just as invested in this mission.

They leave in July… Her first plane ride and her first out of the country experience won’t be for a vacation or a business trip… but for a mission. May she be used by her God to love others from Him, through Him, for Him, and to Him.

And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

I Go To Church Too

There are a few things I am pretty passionate about… one of them is seeking and teaching truth. On Sunday nights at our church we are teaching apologetics to the kids, pre-K through 5th graders participate in these classes. We are using Ken Ham’s Rhyming Books for our Pre-K and Answers for Kids with our Kindergarten through 5th graders.

Now at first this study seemed a little boring and maybe a little mundane to both kids and teachers… but it didn’t take long for the importance of what they were learning to kick in… and now kids and teachers are digging deeper with fire and passion to learn more. My Kindergarten through 5th grade teachers have even decided to go back and review all the past lessons that they went through during the “mundane” time because now they are seeing it with new eyes.

I. LOVE. IT.

This past Monday I just went into their classroom and sat down in the middle of the floor and thanked God for these two women of God who are so excited to be teaching these kids truth. I literally and physically can feel the power of the Holy Spirit in that room… even when it is empty.

The Spirit is hovering over this room like He hovered over the earth and moved over the waters… He is hovering over the minds of those in that room and He is moving over their hearts. It’s glorious I tell ya! Absolutely glorious!

In case you are wondering what happened to “turn the lightbulb on” let me share it with you. Well, first let me start with this… There is this beautiful crazy thing that happens when vocabulary and knowledge meet.

Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise,
And apply your mind to my knowledge

One of the things that I do when I teach the Bible is ask the kids if they know what a word means. I teach them the definition, not just the English definition, but the Greek and/or Hebrew as well. Lack of vocabulary and knowledge of the definition of a word keeps you from grasping the totality of its meaning. It also keeps you from asking questions and distinguishing differences.

Here’s an example to consider. When we are children, just beginning to speak, we learn several colors… orange, red, blue, green, yellow, purple… so then everything we see is grouped into this color wheel according to our known vocabulary and knowledge.

A maroon car is red and a scarlet dress is red and a burgundy bag is red…

The ocean is blue and a navy coat is blue and a turquoise bracelet is blue…

However once you learn the vocabulary and combine that with the knowledge of these colors… then it is very easy for you to distinguish between turquoise, navy, blue, burgundy, scarlet, and maroon. These are all very different and unique colors… but apart from knowing the vocabulary of what to call them, they are just red or blue.

This is the way our mind works…

 Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

We have passed through a generation in the church where we did little real teaching for our children and youth… the goal was really just to keep them entertained. We also have came through a generation here in the church that did very little real teaching of Scripture… it was more of a read a verse and spend an hour going around the room philosophizing that verse and asking what does it means to you, instead of just flat out what did God mean and what do I need to do to line myself up with what God said.

With the lack of real teaching in the church kids didn’t have the vocabulary or knowledge to even question what they were being taught in schools or in church.

I believe this was by our enemy’s design.

What happens when we, including our kids, do have the vocabulary and knowledge… exactly what happened in our small town Bible belt public school happens.

Two kids who had been faithfully attending our Sunday night apologetics class where siting in their 3rd grade classroom when the teacher assigned the science lesson reading. These two children read in their lesson things that were the exact opposite of what they had learned in their apologetics class. These two students took their book up to their teacher and told her that these books were wrong. They did not just say they were wrong because of what their momma said… these two had the vocabulary and knowledge to boldly explain scientifically and biblically the errors contained in this book. The teacher’s reply: “I go to church too, and you are just 3rd graders and have no clue what you are talking about” That was her “educated” response.

These two knew what they knew and as the other children in the classroom asked them questions they were able to share truth, scientifically and biblically, with the other children in their class. What did the teacher do when she heard them doing so… she pulled one of them out in the hallway alone and told her that she was to stop teaching that stuff to the other kids.

Here’s the thing people. EDUCATED PEOPLE CANNOT BE DECEIVED.

Those who KNOW what they know cannot be controlled.

For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

It is hugely important in this day that our children know truth.

Real. Biblical. Truth.

If you profess to know Christ and believe His Word and you teach children in your church… then teach them… teach them faithfully and fervently… or get out of the way so God can put someone in there who will. These are eternal lives we are dealing with… and this is indeed an evil day.

O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding worldly and empty chatter and the opposing arguments of what is falsely called “knowledge”— which some have professed and thus gone astray from the faith.

Romans Study For Kids (Romans 11:25-36)

Romans 11:25-36

25 For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery—so that you will not be wise in your own estimation—that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in;

26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, He will remove ungodliness from Jacob.” 

27 “This is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.”

28 From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers;

29 for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

30 For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience,

31 so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy.

32 For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.

We have just learned in Romans 11:1-24 how God is able to graft Israel back in again if they believe. What we are shown again in Romans 11:25-32 is that this was God’s plan all along.

THINK ABOUT IT…

That’s a BIG word isn’t it! Do you know what it means? In the Greek this word is ametamelétos and it means not to be repented of, about which no change of mind can take place, not affected by change of mind. 

Have you ever had someone give you something and then come back later and say they wanted it back? How did that make you feel? Not good I bet. 

Well this word, irrevocable, means that once God has said it, once God has given it, He doesn’t take it back. Not ever.

THINK ABOUT IT…

Paul concludes these first eleven chapters of Romans with this awesome praise to God. If you have made it through this study you have studied some of the hardest passages in the Bible and also some of the most important. Romans 1 through 11 lay out the full doctrine of salvation. 

Paul then concludes these chapters with a reminder to us that we don’t have to understand it all. We just need to trust God. We need to remember who He is. 

It doesn’t matter if we are not sure we like what we have read in these chapters. God doesn’t ask us to like it, just to obey it. He also doesn’t ask us to explain Him, but just to trust Him. 

We are also reminded by Paul that God does not owe us anything, so we need to be thankful always. Below is a U shape. Use this U shape to help you understand Romans 11:33.

Romans 11-36

The Difference Between Respect and Honor

In our parenting class this past Sunday we discussed the importance of teaching our children honor. With this lesson came the question from one of the parents, “What is the difference between respect and honor?”

In the commandments God tells us to honor our father and our mother (Exodus 20:12) and in Ephesians 6:1 we read, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.”

This parent had a great question. How do we teach honor to our children and how is that different from teaching them respect? Who do you respect and why? Who do you honor and why? How do you show respect and how do you share honor?

In the Hebrew honor in verse Exodus 20:12 is kabad and the short Strong’s definition is to be heavy, weighty, or burdensome. According to the Vine’s Concise Dictionary in its verb form used in Exodus 20:12 it means to give high praise and status to another in word and deed. 

In the Greek obey in Ephesians 6:1 is hupakouó and the Strong’s definition is acting under the authority of the one speaking, i.e. really listening to the one giving the charge (order), (“to hearken, obey”) suggests attentively listening, i.e. fully compliant (responsive).

So this is what it means to honor and this is what it means to obey.

Now what about respect?

As I look through the New Testament Scriptures… the word respect is not used in connection with a child parent relationship… and it is used only once in the husband and wife relationship.

Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.

Ephesians 5:33

This word, respects, in the Greek is phobētai and it means to reverence, venerate, to treat with deference or reverential obedience. It is usually translated as fear or being afraid and is most often used used in relation to man’s relationship with God, that we are to fear GOD alone and not any other man. This is the only verse in the New Testament that uses this Greek word for respect in the context of the relationship of husband and wife. It also is the only occurrence in the New Testament that uses this Greek word as a verb in present tense, subjunctive mood, middle or passive voice.

The present tense means this is a continuous action. The subjunctive mood means that this a conditional clause, strong suggestion, or a polite command. It implies some doubt regarding the reality of the action from the speaker’s point of view and shows that this is an action that may or should happen. Middle voice means that the subject was acted upon and passive means that the subject initiates the action and participates in the results of the action.

In Ephesians 5:33 it looks to me that Paul is saying husbands if you will love your wife she will respect you, but wife you should choose to respect your husband even if he is not loving you as you think he should and if you do you will reap the results of this choice.

When God uses the word respect in Ephesians 5:33 I believe that God politely requests that a wife respect her husband… because by doing so it shows that she respects herself. 

I’ll let you ponder on that… 

In Ephesians 6:1 the word obey, or hypakouete, is in the present tense, imperative mood, and active voice. This means it is to be a continuous action and is used to express a command and it is the subject that produces the action.

Now in Luke 18:20 Jesus quotes the Hebrew command and in its translation into the Greek He uses the word timaó and it means to properly, assign value (give honor), as it reflects the personal esteem (value, preciousness) attached to it by the beholder. In this verse this Greek verb for honor is also in the present tense, imperative mood, and active voice.

Now in the English, the word respect in the verb form means to admire (someone or something) deeply, as a result of their abilities, qualities, or achievements. In the English the word honor in the verb form means to highly respect.

So as we look at honor and respect in our English language we don’t see much difference in the two words… but in the language used by God to originally record His Word they hold very different meanings.

According to our English language respect and honor are conditional. They are reserved for those we have decided are worthy of receiving them according to their abilities, qualities, and achievements. We respect the position and the person who is able to get to that position or through that performance that we have placed on a pedestal is the one who gets that respect… but those below that… we don’t think we have to respect. Therefore respect is conditional according to what we deem as achievements within our own personal context.

Great fighters respect other great fighters. However those who believe fighting is animalistic and cruel have no respect for anyone who does that for a living. Great hunters respect other great hunters, but those who believe hunting is wrong have no respect for those who do it. Thus the reason some stand and applaud something that others choose to get up and walk away from.

In God’s Word there is a big difference between respect and honor. (Actually I don’t really recall God using the word respect at all in the same way that we do.) We are to submit to authority because we respect God. So our submission as wives to our husband, as employees to our employer, or as citizens to our government is out of respect or fear of our God. We show our trust in Him as we choose to willingly obey in these areas… even when we might not agree or find it easy to do.

As we look at the parent child relationship… God never uses the word respect. He uses obey and honor. At the very least a child is to obey their parents. Teaching our children obedience to us, is teaching them to really listen to what we say and to be fully compliant to our instructions. We also need to note that according to the tense, mood, and voice… this is not a polite suggestion to our children. It is a command.

I believe that when we look at Exodus 20:12 and Luke 18:20 at the word honor, this is God’s heart for our children. To Honor. Honor is something that has nothing to do with the one being honored. It has everything to do with the beholder. Honor is placing value on someone because of who they are, not because of what they do… or don’t do. Honor is saying someone is priceless to you. Honor is saying this person has value and worth. Honor means that you carry a weight and burden for this person within yourself.

Honor is huge.

I believe honor is something that is directly connected with love. Honor is more than our English definition of having great respect. Honor is about having great love.

Honoring someone means that you care so deeply for them that it comes out in your words and deeds. It’s not lip service and it’s not obedience out of a command and submission to authority… It is so much more.

Honor goes above and beyond and does more than is expected because they value the relationship and the person.

I believe the only way to teach honor is to first show honor. Jesus did not just show respect for people… He honored them. He showed by His words and deeds that He valued people. Look at His example with His disciples. I believe we need to use this same model with our children.

Honor is not coddling them. Jesus did not coddle His disciples. He taught them by example and He expected great things from them and He called them to do great things.

I don’t believe God wants our children to obey us out of fear any more than He wants us to obey Him out of fear… He wants HONOR and so should we.

Teaching kids to honor others
We love to teach about honor. One of the parts of our honor definition is that we do more than what’s expected. That means seeing what needs to be done and doing it. It means solving problems instead leaving them for others. One family had a sign in their kitchen that read:

If it’s broken, fix it.
If it’s empty, fill it up.
If it’s open, shut it.
If it’s out, put it away.
If it’s messy, clean it up.
If you can’t, then report it.

That’s honor.

Take time to teach kids that they don’t have to wait for an instruction in order to do a job. Honor means that we’re looking for what needs to be done and take initiative. In fact, you may instruct a child to go around the classroom or house and look for one job that needs to be done and do it, then report back to you.

Romans Study For Kids (Romans 11:17-24)

The last post in this Romans Study For Kids we looked at Romans 11:7-16. Today we will be digging into Romans 11:17-24.

Romans 11:17-24

17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive, were grafted in among them and became partaker with them of the rich root of the olive tree,

18 do not be arrogant toward the branches; but if you are arrogant, remember that it is not you who supports the root, but the root supports you.

19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.”

20 Quite right, they were broken off for their unbelief, but you stand by your faith. Do not be conceited, but fear;

21 for if God did not spare the natural branches, He will not spare you, either.

22 Behold then the kindness and severity of God; to those who fell, severity, but to you, God’s kindness, if you continue in His kindness; otherwise you also will be cut off.

23 And they also, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again.

24 For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?

Before we dig into our next section of Scripture, let’s watch this video on grafting.

 

Now as we dig into these next verses in Romans we will be able to use this grafting lesson to help us understand Romans 11:17-24

But first let’s take a look at what Jesus teaches us in the book of John.

We have been looking at God’s choice over and over in Romans 9-11 and we have also talked about what it means to bear fruit… and not just any fruit, but good fruit. 

Are you beginning to see how important it is to read the books of the Bible from the beginning of the book to the end? We would not begin a letter written to us from out mom or dad from the middle and we would not just read a couple of the words they wrote and not read the rest. 

The books in the Bible are letters that God has written us, so we should not do His letters to us that way either. We will never understand what He wants us to know if we do.

It’s okay to pick out favorite parts of the letter, I bet you do that with other letters too, but not until you have read the whole letter first. Read the whole letter first, then you just might be surprised by how many special and favorite parts you could have missed if you had not read the whole thing.

Now lets get back to Romans 11:17-24! 

Read Romans 11:17. First of all we need to figure out who is the natural branch and who is the wild olive. Draw a line connecting which one you think is which.

When we look back at Romans 11:7-16 we can see that Paul is using the natural branches to describe Israel and the wild olive to describe the Gentiles. Circle which group you belong to.

If you are of Jewish descendant and you are a Christian, then you are part of the remnant that we have been studying about… how cool is that!

Now if you are not of Jewish descent then you are a Gentile. Romans 11:17-24 is directed to Christians who were Gentiles.

Romans Study For Kids (Romans 11:7-11)

In the last Romans Study For Kids post we looked at Romans 11:1-6. Today we are digging into Romans 11:7-16.

Romans 11:7-16

7 What then? What Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened;

8 just as it is written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor,
Eyes to see not and ears to hear not, Down to this very day.”

9 And David says, “Let their table become a snare and a trap, And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.

10 “Let their eyes be darkened to see not, And bend their backs forever.”

11 I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous.

12 Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be!

13 But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. In as much then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry,

14 if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them.

15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?

16 If the first piece of dough is holy, the lump is also; and if the root is holy, the branches are too.

 

Read Romans 11:7. This verse begins with a question. Paul asks “What then?” We then read “What Israel was seeking, it has not obtained…”

Do you have any play-doh or molding clay? Or if your mom has time you could mix up some cookie or biscuit dough to help illustrate what God is teaching us in the first part of Romans 11:16. 

Get the dough all ready and pinch a piece off. When you pinched it off did it change any?

Now mix it back into the dough. Can you tell where you removed it?

No you can’t. When we make cookies we begin with one dough and then we take from that dough an if that dough is good, then the cookies will be also.

Now let’s think about the second part of Romans 11:16.

Did you hear in the news about a man named Harvey Updike who poisoned the trees at Toomer’s Corner at Auburn University? 

Take a moment to look up this story. How did he poison the trees? Did he pour it on the branches? 

No, he poured it on the roots. 

Why? 

Because what ever happens to the roots effects the branches.
