Romans 11:1-6 is ready!

Romans 11:1-6

1 I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel?

“Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.”

But what is the divine response to him? “I have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”

In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s gracious choice.

But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.

Read Romans 11:1. Once again we have a question.  What is the question?

God  __ __ __   __ __ __  rejected  __ __ __  people, has He?

How is this question answered?

__ __ __  it __ __ __ __ __  be!

What do we learn about Paul in Romans 11:1? Circle all that apply.

He is an Israelite

He likes hot dogs

He is a descendant of Abraham

He is from the tribe of Benjamin

His brother is a professional wrestler

Read Romans 11:2. What do you learn from the very first sentence in this verse? Has God rejected His people?

Yes             No           I Don’t Know

Read Romans 11:2-3. What question does Paul ask as he begins to explain his answer? Who does he ask us if we know about?

Moses           Elijah           Hercules            Columbus

Look up and read 1 Kings 19:14 and if you have time read 1 Kings 18:20-19:14 to get more of the story. Did Elijah think that there was anyone left in Israel who loved God?

Yes           No          I don’t know

Read Romans 11:4. How did Paul describe God’s answer to Elijah?

the  __ __ __ __ __ __  response

Do you know what divine mean? Grab a dictionary and look up what this word means in the English.

In the Greek this word is, chrématismos, and it is pronounced, khray-mat-is-mos‘. Try and say that out loud, khray-mat-is-mos’.

Could you say it?

Do you know this is the only time this word is used in the whole Bible! That’s pretty cool to know.

Read Romans 11:4 again.

Do you see how God’s answer to Elijah had to be a divine response? Is there any way that anyone on earth could have known how many people in Israel still loved God?

Yes           No         I don’t know

Who had kept these 7000 men from bowing the knee to Baal worship?

The king          Elijah        God        Doesn’t say

Who did God keep them for?

Elijah        The king        Their wives        Himself

Read Romans 11:5.

How does what God did during the days of Elijah compare to what He is doing today with the children of Israel? How does Paul begin Romans 11:5?

__ __   the   __ __ __ __   way

What does Paul say there is at this present time?

a  __ __ __ __ __ __ __

Do you know what a remnant is? A remnant is like a remainder. Do you know how to do a division problem with a remainder?

3divider

The 3 left over after the division problem above is the remainder… or remnant.

God has always left a remnant. If He had not protected and kept this remnant, no one would be saved.

Look up and read Romans 3:9-12.

We have already studied this, but remember everything that Paul is writing is building up His case for Christ and proving that the righteous live by faith. So as we study through Romans, we need to remember what we have already learned.

How many people are righteous and seek after God?

some          few         all         none

Let’s see God at work concerning His remnant. Look up and read Genesis 6:5-8. The word favor in this verse is the same word for grace.

THINK ABOUT IT…

God had every right to destroy the whole earth, but He kept for Himself a remnant. He made a way for Noah to be saved, and really anyone who would believe and join Noah on the ark.

Just like in the math division problem above, God over and over in history has allowed something or someone to come into the world to cause a division. Noah was used to cause a division. Abraham was used to cause a division. Moses was used to cause a division. The Law of God is used to cause a division. Jesus came and He caused a division. He still causes them. Look up and read Matthew 10:34-36.

Now what is left over after a division is called the remainder… or the remnant. What makes something a remainder? Think…

The remainder is something that is left over, because it cannot be divided.

When we are united with Christ (remember Romans 6:5) we cannot be divided (look up and read John 17:20-23).

Read Romans 11:5 again. How did this remnant of Israel come to be?

according to __ __ __ ‘s  __ __ __ __ __ __ __ __ choice

Read Romans 11:6. The remnant is God’s choice by His what?

__ __ __ __ __

What is the remnant NOT based on?

__ __ __ __ __

What would it mean if the remnant was based on works?

__ __ __ __ __  is no longer __ __ __ __ __

If being part of the remnant, or being saved, was based on our own works, could anyone ever be saved?

Yes            No          I don’t know

Whether we are Jew or Gentile… how are we saved? Look up and read Ephesians 2:8-9.

salvation is a __ __ __ __ of __ __ __

THINK ABOUT IT…

Paul begins Romans 11 by reminding us that he himself is a Jew. He is living proof that God has not forsaken the children of Israel.

Do you know anyone who is of Jewish descent but believes the gospel and is a Christian?

They too are proof that God has not forsaken the Jewish people, but has kept for Himself a remnant, just like He did in the days of Elijah.

This enough for today. We will learn even more tomorrow!
