Motivate Your Child Action Plan

PPM-3.jpg

At the first of this year I participated in the book launch of Motivate Your Child for the National Center of Biblical Parenting.  The book is another wonderful tool made available for parents who are willing to get down and real to see serious and lasting changes take place in their lives and in the lives of their kids.

The National Center of Biblical Parenting took it a step further and created a companion guide to go along with the book. They call it the Action Plan

Action!

Learn how to develop a parenting plan that takes your child’s unique needs into account. Use the outline of firmness, visioning, teaching, prayer, and coaching to flesh out a strategy to move your child from where he is today, to where he needs to go. The Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN walks you through the process of identifying an area of weakness and then naming the character quality that needs to grow in your child’s heart. Read about the value relationship and learn the building blocks to make relationships strong in your home. From there you’ll have the framework to move through each day with greater direction and confidence.

The Motivate Your Child ACTION PLAN will give you the tools to address sibling conflict, poor school performance, disrespect, laziness, procrastination, sloppy work, emotional outbursts, self-centeredness, and so much more.

This approach will equip and empower you to parent any age child, from toddlers to teenagers, and beyond. If you have a problem to address in your child, this book can help you envision the solution and then lay out the steps to get there.

I can’t say enough about how much I love the materials that Dr Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller make available to us. God has truly gifted them both with insight and wisdom into todays parenting challenges along with the ability to help anyone who is willing to learn to walk through the process of conquering those challenges.

The Quiet Fight Between Women

PPM-3.jpg

So what is this post about?

This post is about Angie Tolpin’s new course that is entitled The Quiet Fight Between Women, which exposes the problem we have today. And the heading, Redeeming the Division reveals the solution. Jesus Christ is our Redeemer. The definition of redeem is powerful: to reclaim and to take back.

I have personally worked through the first three units and am already trying to figure out how I could lead this study in my own church. So far Angie’s material is biblically sound and calls for those who are participating within the study to go deeper and seek true healing and spiritual growth.

Angie writes, “I truly believe that God is broken hearted over the division among women in His family. It breaks His fatherly heart just as it would break your heart or mine if our children were divided. And the Redeemer I know and love, would deeply desire to redeem your relationships, too.

It is Jesus who heals relationships. It is in Him that we should find our identity and, it is by the power of His Holy Spirit that hearts are transformed and relationships can grow. But we have a responsibility to partner with Him. To recognize our sin, our nature, and how we have contributed to this division among women and partner with Him through repentance and cultivating unity, love, and acceptance.”

Quiet Fight

About the Course

Most women live in a bondage that is culturally and self-imposed due to entrapment in a comparison game. Redeeming the Division, the ecourse, seeks to begin the process of restoring a sisterhood that is currently scarred with judgmentalism, competition, and division, by bringing into light the “pink elephant” topics which create division, and exhorting both spiritual growth as well as maturity past this high school drama that distracts us from our greatest call, The Great Commission.

This is for women who want to be set free.

Click here for a free preview: FREE PREVIEW

This would be a really good small group women’s ministry study. It would also be great for a home study course. I would especially recommend it for any church that is trying to start a women’s ministry or heal a broken one.

The journal entry pages are filled with pointed questions that will require the one answering to really examine themselves. They would also be great for opening up the floor for group discussion opportunities.

In celebration of the launch of this course we are hosting a giveaway of one course AND AN Apple iWatch!

Your Home Doesn’t Have To Be A War Zone

I was a part of the book launch for one of the latest books written by Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller. Life got a little crazy and I was unable to post my review during the launch, but yesterday’s iced in Friday gave me the opportunity to finish digging into the book.

Motivate Book

One of the most popular parenting strategies of modern day parenting is based on behavior modification, otherwise known as reward based parenting. My parents never bought into this strategy and neither did my husbands… so this is just simply not a parenting tool we ever used. In our house their are standards, instructions, and expectations and they are taught and then are to be followed… period… end of discussion.

Our goal as parents has always been to make our children as independent and self sufficient as possible according to what we know they can do. We have always parented with a “this could be the last chance we have to teach them this” mentality.

We have always parented with purpose and intention knowing that we had to prepare our girls to be able to make wise decisions on their own and to not have to depend on us to be there standing over them constantly telling them what to do and when to do it. It’s actually quite funny the amount of times that our kids have come home and shared how they had to bite their tongue because they were currently under the authority of another adult who felt they had to tell them “how” and “when” and “why” concerning everything.

I strongly support this ministry and these books because they are geared to make your children internally motivated. They want to teach you how to help your children become people of integrity in this evil day. They also want to see you ENJOY your kids.

There are some who promote these books because they have seen the changes that learning these parenting tools have made within there home. I promote these books because they line up with the way we have always parented in our home… we just didn’t know it was “parenting tools” we were using, we just thought we were parenting “old school”.

Just the other night, my body was rebelling against me once again. I had fallen asleep on the couch waiting on a load of towels to dry as I tried to get warm to ease the joint pain. I was awoken to the voice of my ten year old who shook my shoulders and said, Momma, let’s go to bed. She then headed up the stairs as I still half asleep mumbled after her that I would be up in a minute to tuck her in and do our Bible devo time.

When I opened my eyes, the towels were folded. When I went to reach for the dishes that I knew were on the coffee table, they were gone. My ten year old had chosen to take care of those for me. I climbed the stairs and told her thank you as I tucked her in and she said, you’re welcome Momma, I just did all the things I see you do before you go to bed.

Proud Momma moment.

That’s internal motivation.

That’s what these books will teach you how to teach your children… because the simple truth is that many of us who are parents now… were not raised “old school”. Many were not even raised inside the home with both parents. Many of us who have kids now don’t know how to teamwork parent. Many of us feel like we are single parenting even if we are raising our kids in a two parent home. Many of us don’t know there is another way to parent other than the reward based way.

Many of us have no clue how to implement the Word of God and the grace of God into our parenting… implementing grace into parenting is something that my husband and I had to grow in and are still growing in as we parent our girls.

Here’s a quote from the book:

One of the important realities of life is that God is always watching. We don’t want our children to view God as a cosmic policeman, but instead to recognize that God sees the difficult situations we find ourselves in, understands our desires, and offers us strength and power to do what’s right, even when it’s hard. God promises us grace, and when kids gain a larger understanding of what grace is, it helps them live their everyday lives.

Grace doesn’t look the other way when someone sins. But grace does identify with our weaknesses, giving us the strength to handle the tough times and empowering us to trust God for His answers in His time.

I also promote these books because I have seen the way these tools have changed the homes of others when parents truly put forth the effort it takes to learn them and use them. If we want our kids to be responsible, we have to first model that ourselves…

Motivate Responsibility

I assure you that your home does not have to be a war zone. It DOES NOT have to be a place of constant battles. Yes, it might be for a while. But you as the parent must not retreat… you must stand firm until there is peace.

If your home is a battle ground now, it is most likely that your kids have already learned your point of retreat. They know how to make you blow. We blow when we are exhausted and feel out of options. If you will pick up this book and read it, then you will be stocked up and fully loaded. You will find yourself confident and ready to do the work.

You will learn what internal motivation is
and how to develop it in your child.

You will learn:

• How to build a strong conscience to strengthen internal motivation

• How faith changes kids in practical, down-to-earth ways

• Ways to help self-focused kids think of others

• A strategy to help kids who tend to blame, rationalize, or defend

• Ways to use consequences for heart change

• Specific heart-based strategies to develop responsibility and initiative

Parenting is hard work…

It’s hard work because it’s HEART work… and beloved our hearts are a mess!

The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it?

Jeremiah 17:10

But the hard heart work is worth it!

They are worth it!

The work you do as a parent doesn’t serve to ultimately control children or to magically determine an outcome. You’re only influencing your children for God’s purposes. It’s God who ultimately changes your children’s hearts. But the daily work you do with your kids prepares the soil for the seeds to grow. Your faithfulness in the face of what appears to be little progress is often the tool God uses to provide a strong witness in your child’s life that will be remembered for years to come.

Motivate Your Child Giveaway

 Motivate:

: to give (someone) a reason for doing something

: to be a reason for (something)

What reasons do you use to get your child to obey? Do you bribe? Do you manipulate? Do you use reverse psychology? Do you intimidate? Do you threaten? Do you yell?

How often do you have to give reasons to get them to do the same thing over and over again?

I am excited to be working once again with the National Center for Biblical Parenting on the release of their latest book… Motivate Your Child. As parents our goal needs to be to raise children who make choices according to an internal motivation of what is right not simply what will bring them, at the moment, the best outward benefit. Our children have to learn to make choices with consideration to the big picture and what the long road will look like according to that choice. If we don’t purposely do this we, will find ourselves with another generation of leaders who vote and lead and live according to their current need and what presently benefits them alone instead of with careful consideration as to what will be the actual long term consequences.

We have to begin to teach this as soon as possible… I mean even before they can talk soon. The NCBP has many tools available to help us do just that. Motivate Your Child is their latest…

To celebrate the release of Motivate Your Child: A Christian Parent’s Guide to Raising Kids Who Do What They Need to Do Without Being Told,  members of the Launch Team are sharing a wonderful giveaway filled with a Go Pro Camera, $50 Mardel Gift Card, $25 Amazon Gift Card, and book bundles from both the National Center for Biblical Parenting and Thomas Nelson Publishing! Get to Know the Author of Parenting Unchained

PPM-3.jpg

I am working with the National Center of Biblical Parenting to help promote a new book by Dr James D. Dempsey titled Parenting Unchained: Overcoming the Ten Deceptions That Shackle Christian Parents

PU book cover

Here is a little bit of how this book came to be from Dr. Dempsey himself…

“I want to give you just a little background about the book so you can appreciate how God leads us even when we don’t know we need leading.  For nine years the book sat 90% finished under the working title of “The Ultimate Father Figure.” Over those nine years, I had to undergo a radical change to my approach to parenting because of my arrogance. God has ways to humble us, and mine was through my children as they grew up and left for college.

My wife, Gail, and I first heard Scott and Joanne in January of 2008, and we recognized immediately that we’d pursued a behavior modification approach to parenting and were seeing the predictable results. In September of 2013, I took the time to re-write the book using much of what we learned through our exposure to the National Center for Biblical Parenting.  I sent it to Scott and asked him to read it and give advice. He had kind words for it, and mentioned his three-fold test for books. Mine passed the first two, but he said it fell short in the third test: It was ‘not compelling.’ In his words, what would compel someone to pick up my book rather than the scores of parenting books out there? I was so glad to get his feedback because that set me on a course to make the book compelling (or at least more so.)

Almost overnight, and simply by asking God, the Lord gave me a new approach to the book, changing it from giving ten Biblical principles for parenting to sharing the ways Satan deceives Christian parents by trying to hide these ten principles.  I thought the re-write would take months, but in one weekend, it came together miraculously as Gail looked on in amazement.  She says she had never seen me write so fast and with such purpose.”

And here is a little bit more…

You’re an author. Can you tell us about your book?

The book’s title, Parenting Unchained, reflects the freedom that parents can experience IF they understand the way Satan tries to deceive them. You can’t avoid the pitfalls you don’t see!

What was the motivation for writing the book?

I felt that the Bible has much more to say about parenting than the few verses that speak specifically to parents. I saw in God’s interaction with the nation of Israel, and in Jesus’s interaction with the disciples, many great lessons on how to parent, so those lessons are explained. But most of all, I want Christian parents to avoid the parenting mistakes I made so that Christ becomes real to the next generation. You are self published.

What has that been like?

I was blessed to be able to publish under the banner of the National Center for Biblical Parenting, so in some ways the process was similar to traditional publishing. Working with them gave me the ability to put their logo on the spine, which brings credibility. They provided the cover artist and interior designer, plus advice on formatting. Dr. Scott Turansky of the NCBP provided the ‘tough love’ editing I needed to improve the book. I’m very grateful to him and proud to be associated with the NCBP.

What will we learn in your webinar?

Because churches need to involve and train parents, I try to promote close interaction between parents and children’s ministry workers. Participants will learn essential attitudes and actions kidmin workers must cultivate in order to involve parents. You have to make these connections and build relationship before you can train them.

Who should register for your webinar and why?

Anyone involved in children’s ministry, including senior pastors, children’s ministers and teachers will benefit. Parents are the key to developing the next generation of spiritual champions, so we need to connect with parents and form partnerships with them. A great way to start is to get them involved in the ministry to children at church.

If you have any more question to ask Dr James D Dempsey feel free to ask them in the comment below or email me at nicolelhvaugh@yahoo.com if you want to keep your identity between me and you 😉

You can also join Dr. Dempsey on Thursday December 11th at 9pm for a Parenting Unchained Facebook Party

and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened.

Acts 16:26

Let me introduce to you one of my new favorite parenting books…

In Parenting Unchained – Overcoming the Ten Deceptions that Shackle Christian Parents, Dr. James D. Dempsey reveals the ten most destructive lies about parenting. He writes from the heart about the way these lies infected his own parenting, and illuminates the Bible’s powerful truths that counter each lie. Both Biblical and practical, each section ends with home activities to help parents take immediate steps to develop their kids’ character–character that lasts when they leave home.
The last chapters focus on the most important adjustments parents must make with teenagers to prepare them for independence. Weaving humor into strong warnings, Parenting Unchained points out the hazards that derail the parenting journey.

Here was Dr Dempsey’s motivation for writing this book:

I felt that the Bible has much more to say about parenting than the few verses that speak specifically to parents. I saw in God’s interaction with the nation of Israel, and in Jesus’s interaction with the disciples, many great lessons on how to parent, so those lessons are explained. But most of all, I want Christian parents to avoid the parenting mistakes I made so that Christ becomes real to the next generation.

I don’t know about you, but I have learned that it is much better to learn from the mistakes of others, than to go through making the same one’s myself. I have plenty of them to make on my own as I face new unexpected territory every day, and so any help I can gather from someone else who has already gained some wisdom from walking the path before me… I have learned it is wise to listen and learn.

I will be sharing my review of Parenting Unchained after Thanksgiving… but until then, here is an opportunity to enter to win your own free copy of the book and also some other awesome prizes!

Parenting is Serious Business

PPM-3.jpg

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.

Psalm 19:14

Many times we seem to discover the last place that the words of our mouth or the meditations of our heart are acceptable in the Lord’s sight is when we are within the walls of our own home. Usually we find that the vilest of our words and actions are acted out right here in this place that should be a refuge and a place of safety from the groaning fallen world.

I remember the day well that I KNEW some things needed to change in me… in me… not my kids… IN ME.

I saw a replay of the epiphany that I had as I watched my girls interact one day with their younger cousin. My teenager was patiently and kindly explaining to my niece how to do something… and my youngest turned around and got up and came to sit in my lap with tears in her eyes and said, “Mommy it hurts my feelings to watch her tell somebody else to do something, because she is always nice to them and she tells me in a mean voice

Here’s the thing… Do your kids sit and watch you treat other people’s kids better than you treat them?

Here’s the other thing… If you can hold it together for other people’s kids… guess what… you have just proven that you can hold it together for your own.

Too often our attitudes and actions are matter of habits that need to be changed. In changing habits you have to have a starting point and you have to have accountability. The National Center of Biblical Parenting has tons of material to equip you with both. They have books and programs too offer you tools for successful parenting from birth to hey, it’s time you got a job 😉

Their latest release is *The Family Toolbox for Preteens and Teens

The Family Toolbox has 8 lessons. Each one has a 1-2 minute scene of a family living life and experiencing common challenges in their relationships. A discussion guide prompts dialogue between parents and teens and a 10-minute teaching session for parents featuring Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne MIller, RN, BSN gives practical tools to use right away.

As they work through the lessons with their parents, teens learn 16 Life Success Principles and parents learn valuable tools such as:

• How to focus on the heart instead of just behavior
• The cues you give that tell your children when you mean business
• Practical ways to remove conflict from the problems of family life
• How to end correction times with impact
• A tool for maximizing heart change in the correction process
• The value of teaching kids to accept no as an answer
• Ways to reduce anger episodes in children

What I loved about this material is that it is something that you work through with your kids. This is not you trying to incorporate some new parenting skills incognito with your kids. In this material you sit down with your family and say, Okay, some things need to change around here… with me and with you. So we are going to start this study as a family and work through this thing together. We are going to discuss what the parents are doing and what the kids are doing and we are going to see what we can learn so that our home is a place of peace and mutual respect.

*FT New Release

As the parent you want to watch the videos and work through the parent page first. This will help you to be prepared when you sit down to go through the videos with your kids and dialogue with them through the discussion questions.

Believe it or not, even if our kids whine about starting this, they will love doing this with you. It shows them that you care. It shows them that you are trying. It shows them that you want to see them succeed in life. Make sure that you give them the freedom to answer honestly. Examine your own self as you work through this with them and be willing to admit and address your own shortcomings… don’t just point out theirs.

This Family Toolbox study will take you less than 30 minutes a day… it’s well worth the time investment. You could make it dinner time convo. Set up the laptop at the dinner table or make it a pizza night in front of the tv in the family room… just do it. Trust me, you won’t regret it!

The Wise Woman with Literary Analysis Journal Questions ($28.95)

How do you train a heart?

George MacDonald’s The Wise Woman enchants readers while it contrasts the ugliness of pride, selfishness and conceit with the beauty of humility, sacrifice, and compassion.

The Wise Woman is a perfect story for a family to read together curled up on the couch under a warm afghan or after a meal. (It is only fair to warn you: once you read the first chapter, you might not put it down. More than one mom has stayed up late to read after her children have gone to bed.)

Read each chapter and discuss the literary analysis questions and vocabulary. Clear writing requires clear thinking. The exercise of formulating and writing answers will strengthen your students’ thinking and communication skills. Middle school and high school students create a profound keepsake as they write their answers in the book.

By offering students 16 to 24 literary analysis questions per chapter, this 160-page spiral bound edition teaches critical thinking in a way that is engaging and transformational.

FireFall 2.0

PPM-3.jpg

Woe to all of you who want God’s Judgment Day!
Why would you want to see God, want him to come?
When God comes, it will be bad news before it’s good news,
the worst of times, not the best of times.
Here’s what it’s like: A man runs from a lion
right into the jaws of a bear.
A woman goes home after a hard day’s work
and is raped by a neighbor.
At God’s coming we face hard reality, not fantasy—
a black cloud with no silver lining.

Amos 5:18-20 (The Message)

I have often found myself praying for the return of the Lord as of late. Things seem to be growing worse in our society and those who want to serve the Lord with integrity and fervency seem to be lacking within the walls of the church… and it seems that those serving outside the walls do so only to advertise their particular “ministry” not to actually just share the grace of the gospel of God and Jesus Christ.

So for me, I had found myself just breathing in and out the words of the original greek in Revelation… “maranatha” (come quickly Lord Jesus, come quickly) as I wondered what in the world we who profess to know Christ were really all doing here… and actually needed to be doing here.

Then the inhale and exhale of my soul became “breathing in Your grace, breathing out Your praise

This was the perfect time to be handed the opportunity to read and review a new book by Alvin Reid and Malcom McDow on the subject of revival… because my spirit was indeed in need of revival.

As I began reading through this book and continued breathing in His grace and breathing out His praise I was reminded that as a believer in this day I needed to be praying for and seeking revival not the coming judgment of the Lord.

The passage above from the prophet Amos is a great reminder to us all to be praying for more of the grace of God upon those we see walking in rebellion instead of sitting back and waiting on God’s wrath to fall…

When His wrath comes it will not be pretty… and as Amos warns us… the closer that day comes the worse the world as a whole will get for the demonic forces of death will be stirred to action all the more as they see their day of destruction coming.

As much as I have my days where it all seems pointless and hopeless and I just ask God how much longer… I was reminded through FireFall that we are not to lose hope… but to look for revival.

I am a woman who does not appreciate sensationalism… I find it quite foolish and I only see it as something that preys on the easily convinced and impressed. Anything that overly attempts to stir my emotions as opposed to appealing to my fully capable of reasoning mind I automatically become skeptical of… and that even more so includes the things in today’s world of Christendom.

So what I appreciated about this book was the fact that it appealed to my spirit and my mind. Reid and McDow begin the book by walking through the documented revivals throughout history… beginning from the beginning.

Have you ever considered that the day God used Moses to bring Israel out of Egypt, He also instituted within them the spirit of revival?

What about Elijah and his standoff on Mt Carmel with the prophets of Baal… have you ever thought of that fire fall from heaven that consumed the sacrifice and the altar that day as the moment of the beginning of a revival within a nation?

What about that day in the upper room when the disciples of Christ gathered together and waited for the promise of their Lord to come and the tongue as of fire filled the room and ignited with them a fervency that led them to leave the locked doors of the upper room and fill the streets of Jerusalem proclaiming the salvation found only in the gospel of Jesus Christ?

Yes… Revival!

As I read through this book, I for the first time realized what happened to me on December 9, 2001. I have wondered for years whether that was my true salvation experience or if it was something else… I just started calling it, “wholly surrendered” because I didn’t know what else to call it.

The thoughts/teachings of some that it was a second baptism of the Holy Spirit didn’t theological measure up for me because God is quite clear that…

There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

Ephesians 4:4-6

So as I read through this book Reid and McDow spoke of revival… I knew then that was what I experienced that day… revival. A revival that began that day and has carried me these thirteen years… and now I find that once again I am in need of revival… and I trust that my God will deliver… so I wait once again for the fire fall.

This is definitely a good read… and I would even say a must read for anyone who is seeking revival. One of my favorite perspectives within the pages of this book is the truth that revival will not come apart from prayer and repentance…

A revival was reported in East Africa that began in Kenya and spread outward. Times of prayer, fasting, and confession marked the revival. Its effect served to build the “fellowship of brethren in Christ recognizing no barriers but sin.”

Hansen and Woodbridge summarized the effect of the movement that spanned several decades in the middle of the 20th century:

The so-called East African Revival nursed the health of a growing church that would survive severe persecution and genocide during the latter half of the bloody twentieth century. Observers of the awakening insist the world has never seen anything like it. Decades later, nearly all of East Africa’s Protestant church leaders had been shaped by the revival.

A significant feature of this movement was the growth of the church in the face of tremendous persecution at the hands of men like Idi Amin in Uganda. Hansen and Woodbridge quoted Anglican Bishop Festo Kivengere who commented on the cost of revival:

“Revival doesn’t come to respectable Christians,” Kivengere wrote before the persecution chased him from Uganda. “If you think that because you’re a good church member, or because you belong to such and such an organization, you’re going to be revived, you had better forget it. The basis of revival is men and women shattered by their failures –– aware that all is not well, helpless to do anything about it.”
